Jeanne Jugan was born in coastal France in 1792 during the deadly years of the French Revolution, the sixth of eight children born to Joseph and Marie Jugan. Her father, a fisherman, was lost at sea when Jeanne was only four. Marie Jugan raised her eight children with grit and unwavering faith, but it was not a life of comfort.
Work Which Is Still Unknown tells Jeanne's story. A peasant girl who senses she is called to a special work of God, Jeanne does not know what her call might be. The years and decades unfold. Jeanne works at tasks suited to a peasant girl and woman: nursing the sick, laundry, stitching, working as a lady's companion. But God's call remains unclear.
In the frigid winter of 1839, Jeanne comes upon Anne Chauvin, a blind, sick, elderly womna who lay in the street. And with this meeting, the loving care of the elderly poor began, and a seed was sown that would blossom internationally as the Little Sisters of the Poor.
