Our Catholic tradition holds that Saint Joseph can be helpful in selling a home, just as he provided proper movement for the Holy Family from Bethlehem to Egypt to Nazareth. St. Joseoh's intercession must be an expression of faith.
In response to the superstitions that Saint Joseph must be buried upside down, facing the street or near the sale sign, or facing North, East, South, or West, etc., we recommend the following guidelines regarding the proper Catholic devotion and intercessory prayer.
1. The Statue should be blessed by a Catholic Priest/Deacon.
2. The Statue should be in a place of honor within the house (e.g. in a window or on a mantel).
3. Prayers should be said asking St. Joseph for help, as once he provided a hope for Jesus and Mary.
4. The Statue should be given a place of honor in the new home.
Prayer to St. Joseph
Blessed Saint Joseph, you were chosen by God to be the protector of the Holy Family. When their lives were threatened in Bethlehem, you guided Jesus and Mary to the safety of a new home in Egypt. When it was time, you listened to the Spirit of God and guided your family to their home in Nazareth, where you provided a home of warmth, security, and joy, where Jesus would grow in wisdom and grace. Gentle and powerful Saint Joseph, be our (my) protector and guide in this hour of need.
As your statue is set in a place of honor in our (my) house, provide an appropriate buyer and lead us (me) to our (my) new home.
As the Carpenter of Nazareth who helped many people with their home, count us (me) among the holy family of God, and help us (me) with our (my) home.
We ask this Saint Joseph, in the name of Jesus, your foster son and our brother, to whom you imaged God as "Abba" Father. Amen.
