Francis in Art and Literature

Francis of Assisi in Art and Literature

Hardback

Author: Pierre-Marie Dumont

In this magnificent coffee-table book, Pierre-Marie Dumont takes the reader on a dazzling journey through art and literature, exploring the humble and inspiring figure of Francis of Assisi.

From Dante, Chateaubriand, and Chesterton to Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, and Giotto, Saint Francis has inspired the imagination of artists and writers alike for centuries. Unfolding in three parts, this book treats the reader to a contemporary biography of the saint, a retelling of his life and Fioretti that combines historical fact and theological significance, and, finally, accompanied by works of van Gogh, a meditation on the soaring poetic vision of the Canticle of Brother Sun.

Lavishly adorned with masterpieces of classical and modern painters and drawing on an anthology of the finest literary tributes to the Poverello, Francis in Art and Literature celebrates the astonishing range of artistic responses to the man who chose to abandon all to live simply as a brother to all creation.
