St. Maximilian Kolbe's heroic martyrdom at the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz is world renowned. It is less known that the Polish Franciscan was a ground-breaking Marian theologian. Pope Paul VI called Kolbe "clairvoyant" in his anticipation of the Marian theology of the Second Vatican Council. Pope John Paul II called him an "apostle of a new Marian age."
